Keep An Eye on the Neighbours This Winter, Urges Wendy

Tuesday, 27th December 2005

Wendy Alexander MSP has launched a Winter Advice Campaign urging local residents to look out for their neighbours as Renfrewshire prepares for one of the coldest winters in years.

Met Office predictions for December to February forecast a two in three chance of a colder-than-average winter.

2005/06 is expected to be a colder winter than any since 1995/6.

The Paisley North MSP says it is important for communities to ensure vulnerable neighbours, particularly the elderly, who may be at risk from the cold weather are coping with the conditions.

It is vital to stay warm and protect your home from burst pipes and flooding.

Wendy said,

“My winter advice campaign for Renfrewshire residents has put together useful telephone numbers, including advice on health, transport, dealing with flooding, as well as information on how to keep warm while conserving energy.

“The most important thing communities can do this winter is to look out for their neighbours, particularly vulnerable elderly neighbours who may be unprepared for the cold snap.

“Communities can help by being observant and ensuring that they open and close their curtains, and maybe popping in at night to make sure they have enough milk for a cup of tea.

“Constituents can find out more about how to stay safe this winter by logging on to the Scottish Executive’s site.”
