Fight against knives
Knife amnesty
Knife crime has plagued the west of Scotland for too long. A range of new measures were announced last week to help tackle the problem.
A new knife amnesty came into force last week across Scotland. Those surrendering weapons to the police during the amnesty will not be prosecuted for possession of the weapon. Initiatives like this have already proved successful in reducing local crime levels and getting weapons off the streets.
The Executive has also just announced funding for 1,000 more hand-held metal detectors to help detect knife carriers.
And prosecution guidance on knife crime has also been changed to ensure those persistently caught carrying a knife will be dealt with more effectively and face stiffer penalties. We need to convince all our young people that carrying knives does not make them more safe, but less safe.
Awards for Reid’s
Local firm, Reid Furniture has become the first furniture retailer in Scotland to secure a prestigious Investor in People (IIP) Award for its frontline staff. And last week I was invited to present the firm’s managers from all over the UK with their awards. Reids has been operating in Scotland for over 35 years. The IIP award recognises the work the company has undertaken to improve all aspects of the business.
Work for the Award started in 2005 with significant investment made in staff induction and training and improved support within the retail division.
Hundreds of staff have already benefited from the internal changes and the company has seen better sales performance and an improved product knowledge across its stores.
This is a fantastic achievement for Reid’s. The firm has shown great determination to grow the business and create an enjoyable place to work. This Award is a clear sign that Reid’s continues to go from strength to strength.
Renfrew Cricket Club
I recently visited Renfrew Cricket Club and was treated to a demonstration from some of their younger players. We were celebrating the Club’s success in winning £5,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to purchase much needed equipment. The team have bought wicket covers which will help them maintain a higher standard of pitch throughout the season.
Each time I visit the Club I am impressed with their commitment. They are now enjoying life in the Scottish National Cricket League First Division and have a thriving youth section with some of Scotland’s future stars making their way through the ranks. The successes of Renfrew Cricket Club are down to hard work, enthusiasm and a fantastic club spirit. I wish them well in the rest of the season and hope to be bowled over with news of further victories!
