Wendy Backs Chancellor’s Plans for 20 000 New Scottish Jobs
Friday, 23rd March 2007Wendy Alexander has backed plans outlined by Gordon Brown to create 20,000 jobs across Scotland.
The Chancellor announced in Wednesday’s budget that the deal with major employers like Tesco and Asda will create 10,000 retail jobs in Scotland. Now he will extend similar partnerships to other areas of the economy.
Ms Alexander said: “Gordon Brown’s plans for a partnership with major employers like Tesco and Asda will mean more local men and women can get back into work. And the Chancellors pledge to look at similar agreements with other sectors for a further 10,000 jobs will mean opportunities in sectors like construction and hospitality.
“Labour has delivered stability, jobs and opportunities across Scotland and we are committed to tackling unemployment across Renfrewshire. Opportunities like those outlined today will make a real difference to families across the region.”
However the Labour candidate warned that jobs and stability across Renfrewshire would be at risk if the SNP are elected to the Scottish Parliament on 3rd May.
Ms Alexander added: “Labour’s record of stability and growth and our commitment to tackling unemployment across Renfrewshire will be at risk if the SNP are elected on 3rd May.
“The SNP’s pledges and their obsession with breaking up Britain will bring higher taxes, unemployment and instability to our communities.
“Renfrewshire’s families would pay for the £11 billion hole in the SNP’s plans with their jobs and their mortgages.”
