M74 Final Completion

Local Labour MSP Wendy Alexander warmly welcomed the start of work this week to the final and long awaited 5 mile stretch of the M74. Wendy has continually strongly supported the development of the road.

The anticipated completion date of the project is 2011.

The projected cost of the M74 project is £457m plus £12m allowance to cover potential mining costs. The project will be mainly funded by the Scottish Government with the remainder being funded by Glasgow City Council, South Lanarkshire Council and Renfrewshire Council. An additional contribution is also to be made by British Airport Authority (BAA). The contract has been let to “Interlink M74 Joint Venture” comprising of construction companies Morgan Est, Balfour Beatty, Morrison Construction and Sir Robert McAlpine’

“This road will relieve the worst and most significant congestion black spot in the entire country. The work that was done on the road’s economic benefits showed that, in terms of road safety and reduced travel time, the road will bring much benefit.”

“Along with businesses in Renfrewshire we have campaigned hard for the upgrading and completion of this vital M74 link. Local companies need a fast route to markets in England avoiding the daily congestion of the Kingston Bridge. This is a vital step forward.”
