Speaking after a statement in the Scottish Parliament by Cabinet Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, Wendy Alexander said:
“As of yesterday there were 311 confirmed cases across 7 health boards in Scotland and 522 possible cases. In Scotland the highest numbers of cases confirmed so far are within the 15-24 year age range. (more…)

I spoke with the Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon both over the weekend and again this morning about the local cases of swine flu. I told her of the strength of feeling amongst many parents of pupils at Paisley Grammar who would like the entire school closed for seven days given two confirmed cases in two different year groups.

Anybody who is ‘associated with’ someone who is disabled will have new rights following the passing of the forthcoming UK Equality Bill. This means that it would be unlawful for employers to discriminate against employees who have caring responsibilities, be it a disabled family member or otherwise.

- SNP Government condemn cut of 20 nursery teachers in Renfrewshire. Time for another u-turn? -
The SNP Government has warned Scottish Local Authorities not to reduce the number of qualified teachers working in nursery education. In Renfrewshire Council, they are cutting the number of nursery teachers in half.

-Wendy calls for apprentices made redundant to get help -
Wendy Alexander has obtained figures for recent local apprenticeship job losses. 25 apprentices in training in Renfrewshire have been made redundant since February. Sadly, only 5 of these former trainees have found alternative employment or training programmes - 20 are still looking for work.

The 17th to the 23rd of May 2009 is National Epilepsy Week which aims to raise awareness of the condition. Local MSP, Wendy Alexander, has joined in the campaign supporting Epilepsy Scotland. They provide regular services for people with epilepsy ranging from information to advice as well as emotional support.

Wendy Alexander MSP is supporting plans for mandatory sentences for knife crime, including jail time for knife carriers. The proposals would give judges the ability to give jail terms of up to a year in the Summary Courts and up to five years in the Sheriff Court.
