Hearing into Vale of Leven deaths

Monday, 1st February 2010

Wendy Alexander MSP  has welcomed the first official hearing of the inquiry into the outbreak of C. Difficile at the Vale of Leven Hospital, which claimed 18 lives between December 2007 and June 2008.

Wendy Alexander said:

“It is essential that the NHS learns lessons from what happened at the Vale of Leven. The recent outbreaks in other Scottish hospitals, including Ninewells in Dundee, shows that there is much more to be done in the fight against superbugs.

“It has taken months of pressure from the families of those who lost loved ones to get us to this point. I have been proud to support them and will continue to press so that they get the answers they deserve.

“I am particularly pleased that so many of the families were able to attend today’s hearing. It is important that all those who wish to take part in the proceedings are able to do so and participate fully.”
