LOCAL MSP URGES CHRISTMAS WORKERS TO “KNOW YOUR RIGHTS”
Wednesday, 9th December 2009
Paisley North MSP Wendy Alexander is urging temporary workers across Renfrewshire to know and understand their rights this Christmas.
Thousands of seasonal staff have been taken on by employers throughout Renfrewshire to cover the festive season and the local MSP wants workers to know that they are entitled to much the same rights as permanent staff.
Along with this message, Wendy is highlighting the governments Pay and Work Rights Helpline which is designed to make it easier for workers to access information on their rights, report abuses, check they are receiving the minimum wage and ensure they are not being exploited.
Anyone who is concerned about their working practices can call the government helpline on 0800 917 2368 or text phone on 0800 121 4042.
Speaking about the campaign, Wendy Alexander MSP said:
“Unfortunately there are too many people working who are not fully aware of their workplace rights and this makes them open to exploitation by employers trying to evade their responsibilities.
“All too often seasonal staff taken on over the festive period on temporary contracts are victims of this.
“I want to encourage any employees – whether permanent or temporary – who are concerned about their employment rights to get in touch with the government’s new pay and work rights helpline.
“Employers exploiting staff need to be reported.”
