More Youngsters Stay in School Thanks to Educational Maintenance Allowance
Tuesday, 21st November 2006Wendy Alexander has welcomed statistics published this week that show 655 young people in Renfrewshire remained in secondary education thanks to a weekly allowance to help them stay in school.
The Paisley North MSP says the statistics mean young people in Renfrewshire are learning more, earning more and can look forward to increased employment opportunities.
The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) was introduced across Scotland from August 2004 for 16 year olds. In academic year 2005-06 eligibility was extended to include all 17 year olds. In the coming year eligibility will be extended again to include 18 year olds.
Speaking about the latest statistics, Ms Alexander said: “Every child in Renfrewshire should be encouraged to stay on in education.
“Too many children drop-out of school when they have the potential to carry on with their education. This can be for a number of reasons including financially. That’s a huge waste of talent and ability.
“That’s why I’m pleased that the new education maintenance allowance has helped 655 young people in Renfrewshire stay on either at school or in college in the last year.”
