MP’s & MSP’s call on Council to Reveal where axe will fall

Monday, 9th November 2009

All of Renfrewshire MP’s and MSP’s today called on Renfrewshire Council bosses to reveal where the axe has fallen in local schools, who have had £2.5m of savings forced on them this year. The MP’s and MSP’s pointed to over £200,000 worth of savings being demanded from big secondary schools such as Gleniffer and Park Mains. In total secondaries are being forced to save £1.7m from local supplies and staffing budgets.

Today’s meeting will debate a motion calling on Council bosses to reveal where the axe has fallen. So far Lib Dem and SNP councillors have refused to say where these savings in schools supply budgets and absence cover have really come from. Today if councillors chance to put that right. All of us as elected members are coming across stories about shared jotters, request for help with school activities, asking parents for supplies and head teachers in Primaries having to go into the classroom to ensure their classes are covered.

In the last 18 months SNP and Lib Dem councillors voted through a 22% pay increase for some top education officials it is time we had the same transparency about where the axe has fallen in local schools. All councillors should vote for the motion put forward tomorrow, to tell parents where the axe has fallen.
