Make Criminals Pay up

Monday, 15th May 2006

Criminals don’t have any right to line their pockets with lavish goods paid for by criminal activity.

But  too often in the past it was  said that crime pays for some criminals. this was something Labour was determined to tackle.  we introduced a Proceeds of Crime Act to allow courts to seize criminals’ ill gotten gains.  And the good news is that the courts are increasingly using these new powers. bank accounts are  being targeted and criminals are now being forced to surrender property, cars and investments. Here in Renfrewshire over £400,000 has already been seized in this way from criminals.  By hitting criminals where it hurts them most, we are also setting a good example to youngster who might be tempted off the straight and narrow.  Money that has been recovered under the Act is then invested in community projects aimed at alleviating the effects of crime.  The Scottish Executive is committed to helping law abiding citizens and I would urge anyone who knows anything about criminal activity to report it to the local police or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.  Exam time

Sun awareness

On a happier note – the weather is improving. But with two very young babies I am more aware than usual about the respect we need to show the sun.  This is Sun Awareness Week and Macmillan Cancer relief is raising awareness by urging people to take more care in the sun. Skin cancer is now the UK’s most common cancer in both men and women.  The vast majority of skin cancers can be prevented by taking precautions against the sun’s ultra-violent rays. So when you are out enjoying the good weather take time to slip on a hat or long sleeved shirt and sun glasses, sit in the shade between 11 and 3 and put on UVA/UVB sun protection cream factor 15 or above. If you want to find out more call Macmillan Cancer Relief on freephone 0808 808 2020.
