Monday, 23rd November 2009

Moorpark Youth Centre 091109Paisley North MSP Wendy Alexander is urging Renfrewshire residents to get behind a local youth club who are competing for £50,000 of funding.

Moorpark Youth Centre in Renfrew is to go head-to-head with an East coast mental health project for £50k of funding they need to open a community café that aims to provide work and training opportunities to young people and adults from ethnic backgrounds.

Moorpark Youth Centre has applied for the funding to open the café from The People’s Millions (a partnership between the Big Partnership and STV).

The centre will be up against the Tynepark Mental Health Resource Centre in East Lothian who are bidding to open a community café, gardens and mini farm that will provide opportunities for those living with mental health problems to learn new skills.

The projects will go to the public vote on Thursday 26th November and people will be asked to vote by telephone for their preferred project. The telephone number for the projects will only be made available to the public on the day of voting and will be advertised in the Scottish Daily Mirror and the People’s Millions website.

A short video about each of the projects, and the telephone numbers for voting, will also be shown on the ITV regional news between 6.00pm and 6.30pm on 26th November.

Speaking about the bid, Wendy Alexander MSP said:

“Jim Ward and the team at Moorpark Youth Centre do an outstanding job providing a variety of opportunities for local people, young and old, in the community.

“I have no doubt their plans for a multi-cultural café will make real difference to families and groups throughout the area and I would urge residents from across Renfrewshire to unite and show their support by voting on the 26th.”
