Renfrewshire Green Gym

Wendy visited a community project in Linwood that transforms derelict land, improves the environment and gets people active.
Renfrewshire Green Gym is run by the BTCV environmental charity who offer people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to improve their fitness by becoming involved in practical conservation activities such as tree and hedge planting, creating and maintaining community gardens, woodland management or improving footpaths.
Local projects are at Ferguslie, Foxbar, and Glenburn, in Paisley; Erskine; Howwood and Linwood. Recent work of Green Gym volunteers has included clearing a raised bed garden of rubble and weeds for youngsters at Woodlands Primary, in Linwood to start planting; helping create a community allotment in Glenburn and working at the Durrockstock local nature reserve, in Foxbar.
Braehead shopping centre is to give the Renfrewshire Green Gym Project £15,000 to help fund their activities in 2010. Its the fourth year Braehead has supported the scheme.
Green Gym co-ordinator, Julie Wilson said: Were very grateful for the continued support from Braehead.
There are a lot of people who see the benefits to themselves and the environment and want to become involved in a Green Gym.
We can now make sure the Renfrewshire Green Gym continues and more volunteers can take part in new projects.
Paisley North MSP, Wendy Alexander visited the Green Gym project, in Linwood and said: This is a great way of improving our environment and making a difference to peoples health and well-being at the same time.
The Green Gym is a project well worth supporting it is one way in which people can not only improve their local environment, but improve on their health as well.
