- Wendy signing to a greener Christmas -

wendy-at-asda-nov-09The Copenhagen summit on Climate Change reminds us all we need to do more for our planet.

So this Christmas before you wrap and then unwrap all those presents give a thought to the future of our planet.

Wendy recently visited local retailer Asda at Phoenix, Linwood to see what they were doing to encourage recycling.  She is pictured with store Manager Brian and local Johnstone man Kevin who helps keep the shelves stocked for busy Christmas shoppers.

Wendy said:

“I was astonished to learn that 12,000 cardboard boxes are recycled every day from Linwood’s Asda alone.  The challenge now is to use less packaging overall. So increasingly fruit and vegetables from the UK are packed in plastic tubs when they leave the farm – so there is no need for cardboard boxes.  Moving to plastic trays for fruit and veg has saved 12 million boxes so far this year.  The empty plastic trays are now washed in reclaimed rainwater to save water and energy.

My visit convinced me that no matter how big or small we can all do more for the planet.  So this Christmas in our home there will be less double wrapping, fewer extra gift bags and more unwrapped fruit and veg.  Going greener means I will have to do better just Christmas card recycling this year!”
