Welcome for Arkleston Traffic Calming – but action still needed on dangerous roundabouts!
Tuesday, 5th May 2009Wendy Alexander today stepped up calls for changes to the dangerous and noisy Arkleston Road roundabouts. Vehicles, including large vans and lorries, continuously power through at speed over the flat roundabout which leads to the M8 motorway.
“I welcome the consultation on traffic calming but the roundabouts need action now. I have been raising these issues for over 4 years and the roundabouts are still lethal.
“In July 2008 the Planning and Transport Department confirmed that the central island at the double roundabout was to be raised to create a dome to try and stop traffic speeding over and through – work was to be carried out summer ’08 and traffic would be monitored. Six months later nothing has happened.
“In January I wrote asking why no works were underway. In March work had still not started – this should have been a top priority. Now we know that the capital budget for minor road works has been more than halved from £203,000 to just £90,000 this year. Finally a consultation will go ahead funded by ring-fenced cash from Edinburgh but the roundabout is still a major danger spot.”
