- Press release reveals U-turn -

Wendy said:

“I am delighted our campaign has succeeded in retaining weekly music lessons for primary pupils. It is a pity that in S1 and S2 these much ridiculed plans for fortnightly lessons still remain in place. Even the First Minister has failed to defend these crazy plans, telling concerned parents and pupils to lobby the Council.

This partial climbdown shows the power of people campaigning for change. I congratulate everyone who helped bring back weekly lessons to local primaries.

But I and my Labour colleagues on Renfrewshire Council will not rest until the daft plan for fortnightly lessons in S1 and S2 is also ditched. S1 and S2 is when pupils think about their future subject choices and music must not be penalised.

The councillors who supported this decision to cut music actively misled the public when they claimed we were wrong to suggest that any decision could be reversed – when now it has been. They were also incorrect in their claim that these music cuts were not opposed by Labour councillors at budget time, when in fact they were.”
