Wendy Alexander MSP steps up call for action on knife crime as official Scottish Government figures have shown the number of murders committed using knives has hit a three year high.

The figures also reveal the proportion of people killed using a sharp instrument opposed to any other other method of killing reached a five year high.

WENDY has called on the Scottish Government to back its amendment to the forthcoming Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill to introduce a mandatory minimum sentence for knife carriers.

Wendy said:

“It is deeply worrying that for the third year in a row we have seen an increase in the number of people being killed with knives. How many more people need to die from at the hands of knife thugs before Kenny MacAskill will take action?

“It is high time Kenny MacAskill backed Scottish Labour’s plans to get tough on knife crime and supported the introduction of mandatory minimum sentences for knife carriers. If the SNP won’t take the tough action required on knife crime, Labour will.”
