WENDY WELCOMES CLEAR UP AT VANDALISED CHOLERA MEMORIAL
Wednesday, 18th November 2009- Now inscriptions need restored -
Local MSP Wendy Alexander has welcomed steps taken by Renfrewshire Council officials to clear up a memorial in St James Park in Paisley dedicated to hundreds of victims of the infamous cholera outbreak in 1832. But she is now calling for a restoration of the inscription which records how 442 Paisley souls lost their life to the disease in 1832.
The memorial has been a target for vandals, grafittied, and was overshadowed by overgrown shrubs and weeds.
Wendy Alexander raised the issue with Renfrewshire Council officials after a number of local residents complained about its current state.
Wendy Alexander MSP said:
“The cholera outbreak in Paisley back in 1832 had a devastating impact on hundreds of local families.
“This memorial is an important part of local history that deserves to be treated with respect.“
“I welcome all the efforts that Renfrewshire Council have made to tidy up the area around the memorial by cutting back the shrubbery and to remove the graffiti so restoring it to the symbol of remembrance that it should be. But we also need the inscription restored so the details of the memorial are there for present and future generations to read.”
Local man Mr Black, who drew the matter to the MSP’s attention, was a good enough neighbour to the memorial – making sure it was not allowed to fall into disrepair.
