Globalisation is biggest the economic challenge of our age. Competition is increasingly not simply from “down the road” but from “across the globe”.
And faced with this enormous challenge the Scottish economy is picking up the pace. And it is not just the record profits of Scotland’s big banks I am thinking of.

Scotland on Sunday Union Debate Speech
Good evening – and happy anniversary!
Let me begin with my vision for Scotland.
By 2020 my children will be 14, and all going well, they will be starting to plan for their futures.
I hope the country they inherit will be outward looking, fair- minded, and multi-cultured. They will be proud of their past but feel citizens of Scotland, Britain, Europe and the world.

The Case For Union (FT Article)

Letter to the Herald
The SNP have had a bad week. This was the week when the choice before the people of Scotland next May came into focus. It was the week when Labour shone a light on the so-called oil fund and found that the cupboard was bare. The SNP set the tone last Saturday when they accused the nation’s statisticians of being involved in “a discredited, inaccurate and political exercise”. Such a cheap shot was simply a foretaste.
